Myanmar Accelerates Solar Power Projects to Meet Growing
Amid rising electricity demand, the Myanmar government is prioritizing renewable energy expansion to enhance power production. Currently, the country operates 28
Solar power system in operation. A total of 11 solar power plant projects are currently under construction and development across Myanmar, with an installed capacity of 1,026 megawatts, according to the Electricity and Energy Development Commission.
Solar tech leader Solis is making waves in Southeast Asia with its new energy solution — an off-grid Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Myanmar.
In May, the junta awarded contracts for 16 solar power projects, each with a capacity of 20 megawatts. These projects are expected to add 320 megawatts of electricity to the national grid. The next phase of the initiative includes tenders for nine more solar projects, with a combined capacity of 1,060 megawatts.
Among these, four projects are being built in the Union Territory of Nay Pyi Taw, three in Mandalay Region, one in Bago Region, and one in Shan State, collectively contributing 530 megawatts. Hybrid (Gas Engine + Solar) projects are underway in Mandalay Region and Magway Region, with a combined installed capacity of 496 megawatts.
