Energy Outlook and Energy Saving Potential in East Asia
The Department of Electrical Services and Berakas Power Company play major roles in improving power stations'' eficiency, including by using combined-cycle turbines and co-generation power
The BPC operates three power stations: Berakas 1 and 2, Jerudong, and Gadong 3 power stations. These power stations use gas thermal power plants whose total generation capacity is about 280 MW. The DES and BPC power systems are synchronised with a 66kV transmission line. Brunei does not currently import or export electrical power.
Electricity can be generated in two main ways: by harnessing the heat from burning fuels or nuclear reactions in the form of steam (thermal power) or by capturing the energy of natural forces such as the sun, wind or moving water. of total generation
In 2010, electricity generation in Brunei reached 3,862,000,000 kWh, in which 99% of it was generated from natural gas sources and the remaining 1% was from oil sources. ^ "Department of Electrical Services, Brunei Darussalam".
To address this, the government plans to bring new power plants online by 2027–2028 using Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) technology, pushing efficiency past 35%. Alongside infrastructure upgrades, Brunei's climate policy mandates a minimum efficiency of 48% for new plants and aims for 30% renewable energy, primarily solar, by 2035.
