Russia will start humanitarian supplies of electricity to Abkhazia, a breakaway Georgian region backed by Moscow, from Monday, Russian news agencies quoted local officials as saying.
“Currently, there is no electricity throughout the entire territory of the republic.” Abkhazian authorities said Russia suspended its financial aid to the cash-strapped region on Dec. 5, including crucial funding for the energy sector.
Abkhazia, located along the Black Sea and bordering Russia's Krasnodar region, has faced prolonged power outages since early December. Low water levels at the Enguri hydroelectric dam, the region's primary energy source, forced an emergency shutdown, leaving residents with 9-11 hours of daily outages.
