New Zealand renewables developer Lodestone Energy has started constructing its first solar PV project on the country's South Island, with a total generation capacity of 27.7MW. Located in South Canterbury, the Clandeboye solar PV power plant will supply clean energy to the milk processing and irrigation industries in the area.
Mr Grogan said the solar farm project is supported by a power purchase arrangement with Meridian Energy, which will purchase 100% of the output for the first 10 years of operation. “The project demonstrates how government, industry, and financial institutions can work together to meet New Zealand's energy security and climate goals.
A large proportion of new electricity generation in New Zealand is from solar farms. New Zealand's first large-scale solar farm connected to the grid was Kohirā in Kaitaiā, in November 2023. Since then, four other large-scale solar farms have come online (Figure 3).
