Tū Ātea building country''s first private 5G network
Wellington''s port is installing what is being billed as New Zealand''s first
Photo / Mark Mitchell Wellington's port is installing what is being billed as New Zealand's first private commercial 5G network, which will be built by iwi-owned Tū Ātea Network Services. Wi-Fi has been the traditional go-to for an organisation's inhouse network, or a temporary network for an event.
Stocktakes were taking place twice a year at the 5,000 square metre facility. Spark's 5G technology allows a drone tethered to an autonomous ground robot to operate on Air New Zealand's private network. The single, automated device helps employees with daily stocktakes by scanning barcodes and sending data through to an app.
In addition, the Private 5G network builds on CentrePort's recent efforts to innovate its port operations, including a pilot scale of an onsite battery energy storage system (BESS) and second solar array, which will improve resilience and enhance the potential for future emission reductions.
A dedicated private 5G network is expected to give port workers the connectivity they need for seamless operation across all port activities. The new network will also deliver high-speed connectivity to numerous tablets in vehicles and cranes, facilitating the handling of approximately 4 million tonnes of freight annually.
