Acquisition regulations
GSA is responsible for two acquisition regulations. The Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) was established to codify uniform policies for acquisition of supplies and
Compared to 2024, an additional 128GW/300GWh of electrochemical storage is expected to be added to European grids by 2030. Looking forward, the Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge, adopted at COP29 in 2024, reinforced the commitment of the G7 pledge on storage.
Energy storage projects in Belgium and the surrounding Benelux region have taken off due to storage-friendly market rules and energy transition drivers—leading to an increased need for grid flexibility and good interconnection across other markets.
Different studies have analysed the likely future paths for the deployment of energy storage in Europe. They point to more than 200 GW and 600 GW of energy storage capacity by 2030 and 2050 respectively (from roughly 89 GW in 2024, mainly in the form of pumped hydro storage).
Balancing the Belgian grid and integrating increased renewable assets becomes even more important when the country phases out of most of their nuclear power by 2025. The Ruien Energy Storage NV project is owned by Nippon Koei Energy Europe B.V. through a joint venture with Aquila Capital.
